Well, today was the longest training run I have EVER done. In my previous marathons, my longest run had been 20 miles. I went 21 today, giving me a total for the week of 42 miles. As a friend of mine says, the heavy lifting is now over and now I get to use the word every marathon runner loves to hear: TAPER!!!!
The route I took today was the first 21 miles of the course. Basically I ran from Hopkinton to just over the top of Heartbreak Hill. Thanks to the Hopkinton Running Club for putting on a great run complete with Water stops and buses back to the starting line. The bad news is the weather was freakin' horrible. Never got above the low 40's and it rained most of the run with the heavy stuff coming in the last 5 miles. The good news is I felt GREAT after the run aside from a few tight muscles. I felt today, I could have just run the last 5 miles if today were marathon day. I've been loading up on the carbs, cutting down on the cigars (OK well, I did have one on Wednesday), and getting a lot of sleep. Just three more weeks to go and I can't wait to run. I wonder though what kind of maniac designed this course. I mean, who puts these long hills in when most people are hitting the wall. That's the other great thing about this run, I never really felt like I hit the wall. I was pretty tired at around 20 but I'm hoping I can push out my "wall" until later in the course so by the time I hit it, I'll be almost done.
I also got my number in the mail this week. My bib number is 22275 which will probably be where I finish as well! ;-)
